You may not associate New Zealand with Malbec, but the climate in the North Island’s Hawke’s Bay is roughly akin to Bordeaux. And their famed Gimblett Gravels, heat retaining and water draining gravel soils, produce world class Bordeaux varietals and even Syrah.
This isn’t the super-ripe purple style of Mendoza Malbec. Nor is it the rustic and earthy style of Cahors. It’s more, I suspect, like Malbec was in Bordeaux when Malbec was big in Bordeaux (pre-phylloxera).
The only rating I could find was from Wilfred Wong, who rated it outstanding, saying:
The Gimblett Gravels region of New Zealand has been gaining traction amongst wine lovers, and rightly so. The 2017 Decibel Malbec is a delicious wine rivaling some of the best from Mendoza. TASTING NOTES: This is a firm wine with healthy tannins. Its aromas and flavors of black fruit, dusty earth, and blackberries should pair well with grilled short ribs.
