This is the Maremma project (on the Tuscan Coast) of the famed Amarone/Veneto producer Tommasi. It always offers terrific value – but in this greatest of Tuscan vintages, it really blows the doors off.

Suckling rates it 93 (best Rompicollo ever), saying:

Aromas of blueberries, blackberries and flowers following through to a full body with firm and chewy tannins. A long and flavorful finish. Structured now. Needs two or three years to soften. Try in 2020.

The Wine Spectator rates it outstanding, too:

The black cherry and blackberry fruit in this red makes an immediate impact, ushered along by lively acidity. Harmonious and enjoyable for the lush, ripe flavors. Drink now through 2023.

The last vintage that Vinous reviewed was 2012, giving it 93 points. But as usual, their description seems the most accurate and revealing of just what this (richer) 2016 offers:

Dark bright red. Amarone-like opulence on the nose and in the mouth, with a raisiny nuance to the ripe, soft red cherry, sweet spice and herb aromas and flavors. So velvety and opulent I would have tasted it in Veneto had I tasted it blind, but it’s so well balanced and smooth that it’s pretty irresistible. Finishes long, with lush, smooth tannins and a hint of residual sweetness. I really like this wine because, for all its showy sweetness and opulence, it manages to retain a graceful quality without going over the top. Amarone lovers will score it even higher than I have.
