Of all Italy’s celebrated oenologists, Attilio Pagli may be my favorite. He delivers the rich, concentrated flavors they all do, but with a respect for terroir and authenticity beyond any of his competitors.
Just look what he did with Capra’s celebrated Sagrantino 25 Anni. Yes, this is a colossally concentrated wine, and an international and critical sensation. Yet it still speaks of Montefalco and Sangiovese.
This top-rank Chianti Riserva is a perfect example. It’s very rich, dark and full – with the concentration and impact of a great Brunello. But it still has the character of a traditional Chianti Riserva.
La Maialina is a tiny, very artisanal estate. (It’s name comes from the last surviving breed of native Tuscan pigs.) So there’s no press I could find.
But take my word for it: if you love truly top-notch traditional Italian reds you’ll want some of this one.
