As the importer The Rare Wine Company explains:

Due to the extreme rarity of its wines—and the fact that its pure Cabernet Francs may be the world’s greatest—Clos Rougeard has become the Loire Valley’s ultimate cult producer.

And Vinepair (a wine collector’s site) says:

The blend of high-quality winemaking and extremely limited production — under 3,000 cases annually — makes getting your hands on a bottle of Clos Rougeard extremely tricky. All the estate’s wine is sold by allocation only, and the majority remains in France. Once you do find a bottle, prices average around $239 for the Saumur-Champigny and regularly exceed $500 for the Poyeux..

Really, there is so much ecstatic press for this legendary estate (and for so little wine to be had). So I’ll just quote the late Jonathan Waters of Chez Panisse, writing about the Poyeux:

That wine takes my heart away; I stop in my tracks. A piece of music does that; there are opera arias that make me pause and I don’t move. You almost need nothing else for a moment. We were serving it…and some people loved it. Still, I want them all to pause and have a divine moment. I want them to understand how amazing this wine is. It’s like when you show your favorite film to your girlfriend, and she says, ‘Yeah, it’s okay.’ If one likes things beyond a certain point, you have expect that not everyone will agree with you.

Certainly the Loire’s – and maybe the world’s – supreme Cabernet Francs.

We sold all of our tiny allocation of the previous vintage, by the way, to a visiting Brunello producer, who couldn’t believe we even had these, let alone at such great prices.
