Every time a supplier comes in with an inexpensive Bordeaux, we give them the same answer:
Why should we buy this when we can sell a real Saint-Emilion for less than $20?
But importer Charles Neal isn’t just any supplier. He’s responsible for such sensational French wine values as Bonhomme, Voirin-Jumel and Daulny. So when he said we needed to try this “mere” Bordeaux Supéreuer I took him at his word.
It was the one wine in the tasting (of a very strong lineup) that just blew me away.
60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, from very low-yielding, old hillside vines facing Pomerol, and with the same gravelly soil. What struck me most was just how deep and rich and serious this wine is – not just for the money, but period.
You can certainly enjoy this now, but it will cellar very well, too.
