Is there anything that Ehren Jordan can’t do…and better than virtually anyone else?
Here he has made a 2016 vintage luxury sparkling wine that British wine writer Jancis Robinson rates not only the best in California – but better than recent releases of Krug, Pol Roger Winston Churchill and Dom Perignon.
Prices at the few stores that have any range from $78.30 to $101.40.
Not only the top US sparkler for Robinson, but her top-rated Failla wine, too. She says:
Roughly 50% Pinot Noir and 50% Chardonnay from the Bohan vineyard on the Sonoma Coast, planted in 1972. Very gently whole-cluster pressed and then fermented with ambient yeasts in neutral 228-, 500- and 1,000-litre stockinger barrels, plus a concrete egg. No SO2 added. The wine goes through full malolactic conversion and ages for a year on the lees before going into bottle. Spends four years on the lees in bottle. Winemaker Ehren Jordan is keeping half of the wine en tirage for another four-to-six years for later release. Disgorged January 2021. Dosage 2 g/l. 4,872 bottles made.
Better than Krug, Dom and Winston Churchill? You be the judge. But this is without a doubt in their league.
