Gran Selezione (or “great selection”) is the new officially highest level of Chianti – with quality (and in most cases prices) exceeding those of Brunello. The wines can be sensational. But Capraia alone is both sensational and under $100.
Galloni rated this 96, saying:
The 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Effe 55 is a wine of beguiling beauty. Deep, dark and yet also wonderfully translucent, Gran Selezione offers so much pedigree, so much character. Black cherry, espresso, lavender, licorice, menthol, plum and cloves all come alive in the glass. The Gran Selezione has a bit more mid-palate pliancy, more French oak influence and more tannic clout overall.
This also enjoys some sky-high scores on Vivino. Here are a couple of their reviews:
Really intoxicating and seductive on the nose. Menthol, mint, plum, and cherries.
On the palate, the flavors run deep of dark red and black fruits with moderate but softening tannins. Bold, with a restrained yet deliberate delivery and a very impressive finish. Another year or two will move this even more in the right direction.
First time with this wine and it won't be the last. Excellent quality CC GS at a very attractive price. AG nailed this one.
Deep, dark purple. Lovely nose.
Deep flavors. Classic Sangiovese notes of black cherry and dark black fruit, and some red as well. Lots of tannins for the long haul. Delicious now. Lots of upside. . This one is a baby, Don't touch another for 4-5 years. Great QPR!
This is a VERY strong candidate for the single greatest value in absolutely top-quality Italian wine.
