This is easily the best deal we’ve had in top-quality, highly-rated and even aged Rioja since at least the 2009 Haro Gran Reserva. And in reality, it’s probably a better wine (and certainly a better buy) than even the Haro was…albeit in a more “modern” style.
What makes this so special?
- It’s from a single high-altitude (550 meters) site;
- It’s all handpicked, and at very low yields;
- It’s entirely from Tempranillo, and only from vines over 50 years old; and
- It goes through both malo and two years of aging in 100% new French oak (a combination of barriques and larger 500-liter barrels), and a further extended aging in bottle – released here at 8 years old.
The result is a sumptuously rich yet still archetypal Rioja Reserva that has won a slew of awards and top scores from publications worldwide – including Suckling at 93 points – their top wine ever from Valdelacierva and top 2016 Rioja Reserva at its normal $39 price:
Attractive plum, toasted walnut and hints of vanilla on the nose and palate. It’s full-bodied and layered. Chewy, but firm and attractive. Drink or hold.
And the Wine Spectator at $39:
Currant, licorice and espresso flavors are rich and focused in this firm red. Balanced and fresh, it has well-integrated tannins and a citrusy acidity. Drink now through 2026.
