This is from old-vine Merlot in Lirac, planted in the 1970s for British supermarket chains – back when Merlot was hot and Lirac was not. How times change.
It’s as dense, rich, serious and substantial as a $20 to $30 Right Bank Bordeaux – but with the spiciness of the Southern Rhone.
There’s no vintage on the label (as Merlot isn’t a grape of the appellation), but it’s from the incredibly rich, ripe, plush and powerful 2019 vintage.
