At only 12.56% alcohol, but loaded with fresh flavors, this is exactly what one wants a Sauvignon Blanc to be.
The winery explains:
The vast majority of our Sauvignon blanc vines are planted in deep, cool alluvial soils with high water holding capacity. Planting the very sensitive Sauvignon Blanc in these soils and using a northwest to southeast row direction helps to buffer the vines against unfavourable weather conditions, such as heat waves. Some vineyards are managed to be a bit more vigorous in growth, with a slightly denser canopy to ensure that some of the more herbaceous flavours are retained while other vineyards are shoot thinned more severely to create an more open canopy. This enhances the synthesis of terpenes which are responsible for the tropical fruit characters, typical of Sauvignon Blanc.
I guess what this translates to is this wine has everything people love in New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, but without the more aggressive and “grassy” qualities that mar New Zealand Sauvignons for so many.
Just a pristine, lovely dry white wine. And such a bargain!
2019, by the way, featured the smallest harvest in South Africa in decades, but with unusually healthy acidity as well as increased concentration. A winning combination in dry white wines like these.
