Of over 60 Riesling Kellerberg Smaragds the Wine Advocate has reviewed, only two (the 2007 and 2019 from F.X. Pichler) have ever rated (a single point) higher than this.
96 points:
From four plots with different soils (from loess to gneiss, altitudes and expositions from southeast to southwest), Martin Mittelbach’s 2019 Ried Kellerberg Riesling Smaragd is deep, complex and excitingly stony on the fine and bright yet coolish nose that delivers flinty as well as crushed lemon aromas. A fabulous nose! Rich and intense but elegant and endlessly vital and mineral, with stimulating salinity and very fine tannins on the finish, this is a great, complex, refined and elegant Kellerberg with a mouthwatering finish. A Must Buy from the vintage. 13% alcohol.
This is about as good as dry Riesling gets, as well as an incredible bargain for what it is.
