From one of our all-time favorite South African producers (and a wonderful man), this is an astonishingly Burgundian South African Pinot Noir: maybe our own favorite Pinot of recent months. Certainly, the most “classic” (which I guess would again mean Burgundian) New World Pinot we’ve had in a long time.
There’s not a ton of press on this, But Tim Atkin rated it 93 points and Suckling rates it the best Cluver Pinot ever – above even their famous $60 luxury bottling, the 2018 Seven Flags Pinot – saying:
Ripe red and blue fruit with notes of resin, wet earth and spices. Medium-bodied and tense with round tannins and succulent fruit character. Crisp and crunchy acidity and flavorful finish.
And its English importer:
The 2020 Paul Cluver Estate Pinot Noir has a lovely luminosity and bright crimson colour. The nose has delicate earthy aromas combined with red and dark berry flavours. On the palate these characteristics follow through combining with interesting savoury notes and just a touch of oak on the finish.
At the world’s lowest price.
