This has earned an outstanding rating from Suckling in every single vintage he has reviewed. Here’s what he says about the 2021:
An expressive nose of wild strawberries, hibiscus and baked raspberries. Medium-bodied with silky tannins. More savory character comes through on the palate with notes of moss, chicory root and nutmeg. Nicely layered. Sustainable.
But he didn’t review this 2020, their finest vintage and the only one sold out everywhere else. Australian Master of Wine Andrew Caillard says of 2020 here:
The 2020 vintage may have taken place during the height of pandemic uncertainty, however the wines are nothing short of "spectacular.” The warm, dry, growing season, combined with progressive vineyard management, winemaking skills and technology, have all contributed to a spectacular year for Hawkes Bay.
The winery says:
In the glass, this wine shimmers in a bright cherry red with ruby red reflections. The nose is enchanted by an intense, varietal aroma and juicy red berry fruits are revealed, complemented by ripe heart cherries and finely spicy hints. On the palate, this New Zealand red wine convinces with a lively personality that can be skillfully ingested by the silky tannins. The finale comes in with a pleasant length.
