2021 Cabecas do Reguengo Vira Cabecas Red

Here is a very rare and precious, even almost miraculous Portuguese red…and we are the only US store to have any! (Indeed, only one store in Portugal has it listed on Wine-Searcher – the only other one in the world. And they appear to have sold out, too. It’s that much in demand. And the only US store to have had any vintage, a lower rated one, just sold out of it at $38.)

John Gilman is by far the most serious and thorough American wine writer to cover (in tremendous depth and detail) the very finest Portuguese and Spanish wines…especially those most admired by wine writers, collectors and top sommeliers on Spain and Portugal themselves.

In his recent coverage of these wines, the single highest-rated Portuguese wine (along with our Raposo Ideal) was once again the remarkable 2021 vintage of Vira Cabecas. It was also the overall winner of all of our Portuguese tastings. He even rated it over the sensational $110 top bottlings of Susana Esteban, which have probably created the greatest buzz of any Portuguese wines in recent memory (at least among the Portuguese wine intelligentsia).

Note: Normally, when you read that a red wine comes from mountain vineyards with pre-phylloxera vines, you might assume it’s a BIG RED WINE. But like the dazzling Clovallon Indigenes (as Gilman’s review makes clear), this is a wine of great beauty and sophistication. And at only 13% alcohol.
