Nick Goldschmidt has made wines all over the world, but he’s a native of New Zealand. And he makes what is for me that country’s finest Sauvignon Blanc. (With the rich texture of Cloudy Bay, but without its sweet oak – and the minerality and style of a great Sancerre.)

The judges at the prestigious Los Angeles International Wine Competition agreed…awarding his 2014 Boulder Bank a staggering 96-point average score. It was also awarded “Best in Class” as the top white wine of any type between $15 and $30. And it also earned a Gold Medal at the Old Ebbitt Grill Oyster Riot Wine Competition.

In the tiny but surely best ever 2021 vintage, Goldschmidt has made an even more extraordinary Marlborough Sauvignon for his new Echo Bay label.

There are so many aspects of this wine that make it special. But above all, it’s Nick Goldschmidt’s style that sets this apart. There’s none of the overly aggressive Sauvignon varietal character that typifies virtually every other New Zealand Sauvignon. Indeed, this could be mistaken for a top-level Sancerre – except it’s even richer and more “honied” in character (though still fresh, vibrant and bone dry).
