This is very much like the Parker 100-point Aussie Shirazes Ringland has made at his own winery and multiple other projects over the years…but with the additional intrigue of the Pappy van Winkle barrels in which it ages! (A lot of wineries are doing Bourbon barrel aged reds these days, but leave it to Dan Phillips to get his hands on used Pappy barrels!)
We had a lot of really impressive (and highly rated) Syrahs open at our big Syrah Symposium tasting, but this hugely rich yet wonderfully supple Syrah just dwarfed them all. (And in a much lighter vintage than 2020!) We sold three times as much of it as any wine in the tasting.
Keep in mind, the Spanish wine press describes 2020 here as “an historic vintage” of truly transcendent quality.
If you love Syrah at its darkest, richest and most substantial – or really the most powerful Australian Shirazes – do not miss this one. It’s monumental.
