Top Pouilly-Fuissés like this can be among the richest, most opulently textured and impressive of all white Burgundies – and they generally sell for $60 and up. Indeed, as Burghound says, this beats pretty much every $60 to $100 Puilly-Fuissé in the market!
Burghound, who rates this at the top of his “sweet spot” list, says:
Subtle but not invisible wood sets off mildly exotic aromas of white peach, lychee, dried apricot and anise. Here too the medium-bodied flavors possess a sleek mouthfeel while culminating in moderately austere and bone-dry finale that is compact, balanced and solidly persistent.
There’s very little of it: from two of Sangouard’s finest south-facing plots, with vines over 50 years old, totaling just .33 hectares. It’s also Sangouard’s ode to old school Pouilly-Fuissé: aged entirely in older oak barrels.
This is, as Sanguoard wants it to be, a bit of a throwback wine: with the density and palate presence of white Burgundies from the 1970s and earlier – though I suspect this is also more refined than those wines were, especially in the 2022 vintage (which as critics have noted, has a rare combination of generosity and pitch-perfect balance).
Indeed, this appears to be Burghound’s top $30 white Burgundy of all time.
