Leithenberg, where the Esterhazys reign supreme, is one of the world’s oldest wine regions. With soils of mica, slate and limestone, the roots go deep and yields are low – producing rich and full bodied Gruners especially, though still with great freshness.
Ever since they brought their first great cellarmaster in from Burgundy, in 1758, these wines have been amongst Austria’s finest.
It’s hard to imagine a dry white wine under $20 more rewarding or more versatile than these. And in fact, this could easily pass for a Wachau Gruner Veltliner at 2 to 3 times the price.
