Tasting Panel 93:
Full-bodied, with generous purple fruit and chocolate-kissed coffee. Well-structured and superb balance delivers like a wine three times its listed retail price.
The winery says:
Inspired by the outstanding Cabernets of Napa Valley, our Hazel & Axe Cabernet Sauvignon is a stunner. It showcases bold, dark fruit flavors of blackberry and cassis, harmoniously balanced with subtle oak nuances. A well-structured body, with velvet-like tannins and a lingering finish, make it a timeless representation of the classic California Cabernet.
And from a Master Sommelier:
Kevin Morrisey started his wine journey interning for Chateau Petrus. His wine education was then polished under Tony Soter at Etude with a stop at Stags’ Leap. Continuing his vision from Etude Morrisey made the 2021 Hazel & Axe with grapes from Napa, Sonoma and Mendicino. Showcasing bold, dark fruit flavors of blackberry and cassis, harmoniously balanced with subtle oak nuances. A well-structured body, with velvet-like tannins and a lingering finish, make it a timeless representation of the classic California Cabernet. Unbelievable value!
Hazel, by the way, is the partners’ grandmother – and the Hazel & Axe line is reserved for wines they feel would make her proud. “Axe” comes from her expression “wield your axe” – by which she meant use your inner strength to always move forward and excel.
Again, this is mainly from prime Napa mountain fruit, and is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in all second fill French oak.
