Suckling rates this outstanding, but the more revealing reviews are from Decanter and the New Zealand Wine Orbit, which rates it THE top Rioja in its class at 93 points:
Gorgeously fruited, this modern rendition shows dark berry, rich floral, toasted nut and warm spice aromas on the nose, followed by a wonderfully weighted palate delivering terrific fruit richness with stylish complexity. Harmonious and supple, offering fabulous drinking. At its best: now to 2027.
And Decanter:
Bideona has only been going for six years, but the bodega has already made a big impression with a set of unforced wines based on old Alavesa vines. For this bargain red, the Tempranillo vines are old (50 years on average, with some as old as 100 years) but the wine is vibrantly young and juicy-sappy: it’s full of just-off-the-bush cherry, mulberry and plum.
Again, it was the top Rioja in its class.
It was the first wine I tried at the Bideona seminar, and my notes read: “Beautiful wine. Very silky-rich and expansive. Peacock’s tail mouth-filling flavors. Hard to see how it goes up much from here.”
(Though in fact it did!)
Just a really good, insanely beautiful and delicious bottle of wine for less than $20.
