This one is a legend. Champagne writer Richard Juhlin says:
On one single tour I was told on three separate occasions that the best truly old Champagnes ever made were pure Pinot Meunier Champagnes from Jose Michel. The winemakers at Deutz and Legras were unuanimous. Although they themselves work with grand cru Chardonnay, they confirmed that the real cellar wines were Pinot Meunier. Could this really be true? Krug’s wonderful older vintage wines are what I’ve always seen as the exception that proves the rule, but the fact is Jose Michel’s recipe is exactly the same. Extremely old vines, no malolactic fermentation, and fermentation in oak barrels.
