Now, what makes this wine so special?
- For one, the vineyard: it was part of the original Biondi-Santi estate. When Tancredi Biondi-Santi died in 1970, he passed it on to his eldest daughter, who then sold it. Brunello doesn’t get any more pedigreed than that.
- Plus, it’s all Brunello fruit, but unlike the La Gerla Brunellos, which are aged in old Slavonian oak casks, this is raised in French barrigues, so it’s more immediately rich and appealing.
The only publication to have so far reviewed it, Falstaff, not only rates 2020 the top Birba ever, but equal to La Gerla’s $100 Brunello Pieve…and better than a lot of famous older vintages, like 2015, 2010, 2009, 2007 and even the 2001 Riserva!
Needless to say, this is an incredible buy for not only a Brunello in all but name, but one from the appellation’s original and supreme vineyard.
