Like all of these super secret wines, it’s a wine that’s both much more expensive under its own label and VERY highly regarded. (Though this one isn’t even imported now into the US.)
Nevertheless, the Wine Advocate recently did a feature on this – and every sinle vintage from 2001 to 2020 rated 94 to 96+. And even those over 20 years old were still terrific.
Here’s what we can tell you:
· It’s from one of the original wineries in the very best part of Australia’s top Cabernet region, the Margaret River, planted in 1973;
· It sells in Australia itself for over $50 ($80 Australian);
· Tasted beside another very famous 95-point Margaret River neighbor, this was FAR smoother, silkier, more velvety, elegant and classy (and unusually, without the green notes that so often characterize Margaret River Cabernets)…in a word, more delicious.
Indeed, even though this is only 13.5% alcohol, it’s one of the most perfectly ripe and beautiful Margaret River Cabernets we’ve tasted…at any price. (And the best ones - like all of this wine’s neighbors - are over $100.)
Though there haven’t been any professional reviews for this 2021 yet (either under its own label or this one), it did (under this label) earn a Gold Medal at a prestigious competition judged by Master Sommeliers and Masters of Wine.
Also under this label, it has two outstanding reviews on CellarTracker, which says:
Blackcurrant, blackberry and cocoa lead the charge, brightening up with air as raspberry and blueberry notes for to the fore along with the classic, minty Margaret River bay leaf. Fresh and fruit-focused with 25% new French oak uplifting and not overpowering the bouquet. Supple, elegant, energetic and mouthwatering on entry with a super fine tannin structure covered in dark fruit and chocolatey oak notes that resolve into chocolate covered cherry notes in a pure, elegant, persistent finish with nice minty retronasal blast. Fantastic mouthfeel.
Here’s Suckling on the previous vintage (and style):
Blackberries, mulberries, currants and rosemary on the nose, with some tobacco. Medium-bodied, creamy and pure, with silky tannins and a supple, gently spicy finish.
100% estate grown, organically farmed, old-vine fruit. This stuff is about as good as it gets. And as pure and beautiful as Australian Cabernet gets.
