Cencioni always seems to make a Rosso of Brunello quality (indeed, Vinous some times rates this even higher than the Brunello). But this 2021 may take the Rosso to another level.
As Vinous explains:
2021 combines the underlying power of a classic year with the elegance and opulence of a warm and dry vintage. Two thousand twenty-one was a hot season with helpful rains that lasted well into late spring. In April, a frost arrived that decimated many vineyards in the south. Luca Marrone, head winemaker at Poggio di Sotto, explained that production was down by 80% as 10 hectares were lost to frost, and their warm and dry conditions continued throughout the summer with a small amount of refreshing rains in late August that brought balance.
The only critic to review this so far, Suckling, rates it both outstanding and the top Cencioni Rosso to date.
Only one other US store even has this brilliant Rosso, at $37.80…and they only offer it by the case. (Which means they don’t really have any, and will only try to order it if you do.)
Like the two Brunellos, though, there’s very little of it.
