Gilman’s top-rated Vinho Verde, and one of his top Portuguese dry whites, this year. He says:
The Vale do Lima is very close to the Atlantic Ocean coastline, giving the Vinho Verde produced in this small D.O. a saline personality that echoes the beautiful Albariños of Galicia a few hundred kilometers to the north. Gorro’s Vinho Verde is made from forty-plus year-old Loureiro vines, with one parcel planted on schist and the other on granite. The wine is given about nine months of élevage on its fine lees and the 2023 version offers up a bright and complex bouquet of lime, breadfruit, stony minerality, citrus peel, lemongrass and a topnote of lovely salinity. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied, focused, zesty and complex, with excellent depth of fruit at the core, fine minerality and grip, just a wisp of CO2 and a long, impeccably balanced and very classy finish.
