2018 Marques de Casa Concha Cabernet

reg. $25 / $14.99 sale

A stunning Cabernet bargain, even at its normal $25 price. Two-thirds of this, in fact, comes from the same vineyard as the 100-point and $150 icon 2018 Don Melchor – and it’s made by the same oenologist as Lafite, Latour, Mouton and Margaux! And many of the vines are over 100-years-old.

The leading South American wine publication, Descorchados, rates this the best Casa Concha Cabernet ever at 95 points:

This year, two-thirds comes from vineyards in Puente Alto and one-third from Pirque, both classic areas in the Alto Maipo, near the foot of the Andes in the Maipo River Valley. Moderated by the typical flavors of the variety in that part of Chile, this one has a layer of earthy and herbal notes, accompanied by or, better said, seasoned by mentholated tones. The palate has the friendly and polished tannins of the finest Maipo wines, while the firm, tense acidity continually provides freshness.

Vinous rates it the best ever, too, and above many Don Melchors:

Puente Alto and Pirque come together in this textbook Maipo Cabernet Sauvignon with a twist: it was aged in casks to add elegance to the region’s familiar complexity. Licorice, cassis, blackberry and thyme flavors appear at first followed by caramel. Very precisely calibrated, the firm tannins and expressive flavor underline the accomplished nature of the wine and lengthy, juicy finish.

As does the Wine Advocate:

The 2018 Marques de Casa Concha Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of grapes from Puente Alto and Pirque. It has some balsamic aromas and clean cassis aromas, with good freshness combined with good volume. It has good varietal typicity, very integrated oak (matured in barrique and oak foudres) and just a touch of cedar wood and is juicy and vibrant. This is really very good in a fresh vintage like 2018.

And Suckling:

A cabernet that shows structure, yet at the same time it is savory and pure with currant, chocolate and walnut undertones. Juicy with lots of cassis, too. Full-bodied, chewy and savory. Dry. Delicious. Drink or hold.

And finally, Wine & Spirits:

Marcelo Papa heads up the winemaking team at Concha y Toro, and one of his most impressive achievements during his years at the company has been the transformation of Marqués de Casa Concha Cabernet. He focuses the wine on Tocornal Oriente, a vineyard in Puente Alto across the road from Don Melchor. He also includes a significant contribution from Pirque (35 percent) on the south bank of the Maipo River. The wine far outperforms its price—a 2018 with finesse in its tannins and gracious strawberry-plum flavors. It’s a cool cabernet with a Bordeaux accent and a Chilean lilt.

From stellar vineyards and ancient vines, this is an unusually high-quality Cabernet even at its normal $25 price.

2020 Terrazas de los Andes Cabernet Reserva

reg. $22 / $12.99 sale

Suckling 94:

Pure aromas of blackberries, plums and crushed stones follow through to a medium to full body with medium, chewy tannins and plenty of fruit, but a tight, reserved finish. Give this a year to two to soften and open, but already pretty. Polished texture at the end. Joyful. Drink now or hold.

Not only the top Terrazas Cabernet to date, but better than any of their Malbecs, too.

This really is just an insanely delicious bottle of Cabernet for the money.
